US Marine restrains passenger who tried to open exit door, diverting flight to Seattle

Determined to be in medical distress, the passenger was released to hospital care without charges.

Overview

  • Approximately 10 hours into All Nippon Airways Flight 114 from Tokyo to Houston, passenger attempted to open an emergency exit and was tackled by Sgt. Maj. Jody Armentrout.
  • Flight crew provided zip ties to secure the passenger to his seat, and Armentrout remained beside him until the Airbus A350 landed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
  • Port of Seattle Police determined the restrained passenger was suffering a medical crisis and transferred him to a local hospital for evaluation.
  • A second passenger was removed on the tarmac after punching a lavatory door in frustration over the diversion.
  • The flight resumed to Houston, landing at 12:42 p.m. CT on May 24, and authorities confirmed no charges were filed against either passenger.
