Overview
- Anthropic said Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 and that the company will begin restoring access to those models the following day.
- Mythos 5 had already been partly redeployed to a vetted set of U.S. organizations after a prior Commerce review and Fable 5 will be brought back under supervised rollouts.
- At the same time Anthropic expanded its commercial stack by releasing Sonnet 5 as the new default mid-tier model and launching Claude Science, a reproducible research workbench that runs on existing Claude models.
- Anthropic’s models now run natively on Nvidia GB300 Blackwell Ultra hardware through Microsoft Azure, supporting its large compute and investment deals with Microsoft and Nvidia as the company prepares for an IPO.
- The episode highlights a growing tradeoff in Washington between gating frontier AI to reduce risks such as automated cyberattacks and keeping U.S. firms commercially competitive as regulators build review processes.
