U.S. Launches Retaliatory Barrage on ISIS in Syria, Striking More Than 70 Targets

The Pentagon cast the strikes as a direct reprisal for the Dec. 13 attack that killed two U.S. troops plus an interpreter.

Overview

  • CENTCOM said fighter jets, helicopters and artillery employed more than 100 precision munitions across sectors of Homs, Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa.
  • Local monitor OSDH reported at least five ISIS members killed, including a drone cell leader in Deir ez-Zor, with casualty figures still provisional.
  • Jordan said it participated in the operation, which U.S. officials framed as a “declaration of vengeance” against ISIS strongholds.
  • Since the Dec. 13 attack near Palmyra, U.S. and allied forces have carried out 10 operations in Syria and Iraq, killing or detaining 23 suspected militants, according to CENTCOM.
  • Syrian authorities reiterated opposition to ISIS as Washington blames the group for the deadly assault, though the identified assailant served in Syrian security forces.
