U.S. Launches Cybersecurity Labeling for Smart Devices

The voluntary Cyber Trust Mark program aims to help Americans identify secure internet-connected devices and encourage stronger cybersecurity standards.

The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, a voluntary cybersecurity labeling initiative, will certify consumer IoT devices like baby monitors, fitness trackers, and security cameras that meet federal cybersecurity standards.
The program is managed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and based on criteria developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), including strong passwords, software updates, and data protection.
Products certified under the program will display a shield-shaped logo and a QR code linking to detailed security information, such as update policies and configuration instructions.
Retailers including Amazon and Best Buy plan to highlight labeled products, with certified devices expected to reach store shelves in 2025.
An executive order is being finalized to mandate federal agencies to purchase only Cyber Trust Mark-certified products starting in 2027.
