US-India Relations Tested by Alleged Assassination Plot

Despite the serious allegations, high-level meetings and pledges of closer cooperation between the two countries have continued.

An Indian official and Indian national Nikhil Gupta are accused of plotting to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a US citizen advocating for a sovereign Sikh state in northern India.
The US became aware of the plot in late July and demanded that India investigate, with President Biden raising the issue with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a September summit.
Despite the assassination plot, high-level meetings and pledges of closer cooperation between the US and India have continued.
This is the second such accusation in recent months, following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations that the Indian government may have been linked to the killing of a Sikh separatist near Vancouver in June.
India's reactions to the two cases have differed sharply, with a more cooperative response to the US accusations.
