U.S. Imposes Approval Rules on Iranian Diplomats’ Costco Access and High-Value Purchases

The State Department now classifies wholesale-club memberships plus big-ticket buys as controlled diplomatic benefits.

Overview

  • The Office of Foreign Missions posted determinations for publication on Sept. 22 after Clifton Seagroves signed them on Sept. 16 and 18.
  • Iranian diplomats and their dependents in or visiting New York must secure State Department approval to hold wholesale-club memberships or obtain goods from those stores.
  • Purchases of luxury items over $1,000 and vehicles over $60,000 now require prior authorization, according to the OFM chief.
  • The restrictions apply year-round to Iranian representatives to the United Nations and single out Iran even as broader options were explored for other delegations.
  • The move follows recent visa denials for Palestinian Authority leaders and consideration of similar rules for delegations from Sudan, Zimbabwe and Brazil.
