U.S. Grandmother Freed After Bahamas Gun Arrest on Royal Caribbean Cruise

The case underscores strict Bahamian gun laws that can send visitors to prison for firearm possession.

Overview

  • Mary Robinson, 69, was arrested Dec. 2 in Nassau after police found a firearm and ammunition aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas.
  • Her attorney says the weapon was a black Kel-Tec .380 pistol with four rounds that apparently passed initial screening at Port Everglades in Florida.
  • Robinson pleaded guilty and received an $8,000 fine, with a stated default of 24 months at the Bahamas Department of Corrections if unpaid.
  • Because the fine was not paid immediately, she spent about five to six days in Fox Hill Prison before the payment was made and she was released.
  • A GoFundMe organized by her granddaughter raised more than $12,000 to cover the fine, as Royal Caribbean and Port Everglades offered no substantive public comment beyond noting shipboard weapons are prohibited.
