U.S. Gas Prices Slide to $3.02 Average, on Cusp of Dropping Below $3

Falling oil alongside higher inventories is pushing pump prices down.

Overview

  • GasBuddy reports the national average fell 6.4 cents in a week to $3.02 per gallon, down 13.7 cents from a month ago and 14.4 cents from a year ago, based on millions of station-level price reports.
  • Diesel also declined, with the national average down 3.5 cents to about $3.63 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.
  • Analysts at GasBuddy say the national average is close to dipping below $3 in the coming weeks, with a few stations in Texas, Oklahoma or Wisconsin potentially reaching sub-$2 levels.
  • Local prices reflect broad declines: central Ohio averaged $2.77 after a 25.2-cent weekly drop, Houston averaged $2.59 with one station at $2.29, and AAA says Michigan fell 17 cents to $2.92.
  • Market and supply data show WTI briefly below $60, a 3.7-million-barrel U.S. crude inventory build, gasoline and distillate stocks slightly under seasonal norms, and continued regional divergence with West Coast prices still elevated.
