U.S. Foreclosures Climb 17% in Q3 2025 as Filings Top 101,000

ATTOM warns the persistent gains may signal emerging borrower stress in some areas.

  • Properties with foreclosure filings reached 101,513 in the third quarter, up less than 1% from Q2 and 17% from a year earlier.
  • Foreclosure starts totaled 72,317 for the quarter, rising 2% quarter over quarter and 16% year over year.
  • Lender repossessions increased to 11,723, up 4% from Q2 and 33% from Q3 2024, while the average completion time fell to 608 days.
  • Activity is concentrated in states such as Texas, Florida and California, with Florida recording the highest rate at one filing for every 814 housing units.
  • September saw 35,602 filings, a 0.3% dip from August but a 20% gain from September 2024.
