Overview
- U.S. Central Command says Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces fired ballistic or rocket weapons at two U.S. Navy ships in international waters and U.S. forces then struck three oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and nearby waters in response.
- CENTCOM released video showing the vessels burning and reported that one tanker was fully destroyed while two others were permanently disabled near the island Charg and near Jask, and that no U.S. personnel were injured.
- U.S. officials described the three tankers as part of a billion-dollar shadow network used to move Iranian oil and to finance the IRGC and its regional proxies, a network the strikes were meant to disrupt.
- Attribution of ownership and flagging remains uncertain: some reports identified one ship as the Noxen under the Comoros flag, but independent verification of links to the IRGC is limited in the immediate aftermath.
- The strikes deepen a pattern of episodic U.S.-Iran exchanges at key shipping chokepoints and could raise commercial and security risks for vessels operating near Charg, Jask, and the Gulf of Oman while increasing pressure on Iran's export networks.
