US Flagbearers Vincent Hancock and Jordan Chiles Secure Gold at Pan American Games
Hancock claims his third Pan American Games title in skeet shooting, defeating Argentina's Federico Gil; while gymnast Chiles propels U.S. team to its sixth consecutive women's team all-round gold.
- Veteran shooter Vincent Hancock secured his third Pan American Games title in skeet shooting, narrowly beating Argentina's Federico Gil 57 to 55. This victory also afforded Gil a quota spot at the Paris Olympics as Hancock had already earned his at the world championship.
- Hancock, who has been a shooter since he was a child, is a three-time Olympic gold medalist and has expressed interest in competing at two more Olympics before retiring.
- Jordan Chiles, a Tokyo Olympics silver medalist and a close friend of renowned gymnast Simone Biles, led the U.S. women's gymnastics team to its sixth consecutive Pan American gold medal. The team, also consisting of Kayla DiCello, Zoe Miller, Kaliya Lincoln, and Tiana Sumanasekera, landed a total score of 165.196, far outweighing Brazil's 161.564 and Canada's 154.230.
- Chiles topped the overall individual scoring table with 54.666 points, slightly edging DiCello, the 2021 world all-around bronze medalist. Chiles is considering either competing in the Paris Olympics or returning for her junior year at the University of California.
- As of the second day of the Pan American Games, the U.S. has secured 46 medals, 20 of them being gold. Mexico follows with 18 medals, 10 of them gold.
