U.S. F-16 Crashes at Spangdahlem Air Base

An Air Force investigation will review flight data and training procedures to address short-term fleet safety concerns.

Overview

  • The F-16, assigned to the 52nd Fighter Wing, crashed on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at about 2:30 p.m. local time while on approach to Spangdahlem Air Base and the pilot ejected before impact.
  • Local emergency teams from the Eifelkreis Bitburg‑Prüm district and base crews secured the scene, extinguished a fire that produced a large black smoke plume, and reported no civilian ground injuries.
  • The pilot is receiving medical treatment and the U.S. military has opened a formal investigation that will examine flight data, communications and wreckage to determine the cause.
  • German air traffic control and local reports say the jet was returning from a multi‑aircraft training sortie and other participating F-16s diverted to Ramstein for landing.
  • This crash is the second U.S. F-16 mishap in under a week following a Sept. 17 Michigan incident, renewing scrutiny of F-16 training safety, prompting likely operational checks, and putting attention on Spangdahlem’s past training accidents.
