U.S. Executions Hit 15-Year High in 2025 as Florida Drives Surge

A year-end DPIC report cites Florida-led scheduling in a few states despite declining jury use of death sentences.

Overview

  • DPIC counts 46 executions so far this year with two more scheduled this week, the most since 2010 and nearly double 2024’s total.
  • Florida conducted 19 executions, while Alabama, South Carolina, and Texas brought the four-state share to roughly 72% of the national total.
  • Only 22 new death sentences were imposed across more than 50 capital trials, with juries opting for life in a majority of eligible cases.
  • Public support for capital punishment fell to 52% in Gallup’s October poll, marking a five-decade low.
  • States expanded or used contentious methods — nitrogen gas in Alabama and Louisiana and firing squads in South Carolina — as the U.S. Supreme Court granted no stays in 2025.
