U.S. Envoy Says Syria’s Sharaa Plans Washington Visit to Join Anti-ISIS Coalition

The expected signing would signal Washington’s openness to the transitional government after HTS’s delisting.

Overview

  • U.S. Special Envoy Tom Barrack said in Bahrain that President Ahmed al-Sharaa is expected to travel to Washington in November.
  • Barrack said Syria would "hopefully" sign on to the U.S.-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS during the visit.
  • He told Axios the trip is planned for Nov. 10 and that Sharaa is expected to meet President Trump at the White House.
  • Syria is not currently part of the coalition formed in 2014, and Sharaa’s September UN address underscored a broader push to restore foreign ties.
  • Sharaa’s group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, was delisted by Washington in July, as ISIS attempts a resurgence in parts of Syria and Iraq.
