U.S. Envoy-Designate Sergio Gor Meets Modi in Delhi to Recalibrate Ties

The pre-credential trip is intended to ease tariff strains by reviving trade talks linked to Washington's 50% duties on Indian goods.

Overview

  • Gor said he had an incredible meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed defence, trade, technology and critical minerals, adding that the United States values its relationship with India.
  • The six-day visit runs from October 9 to 14 with Deputy Secretary Michael J. Rigas, and the U.S. Embassy says Gor will present his credentials at a later date.
  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held what officials called productive exchanges on the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, with several outlets reporting a meeting with NSA Ajit Doval as well.
  • The outreach comes after the U.S. raised tariffs on Indian exports to 50%, including a 25% levy tied to purchases of Russian crude, a move India calls unfair, while trade talks have recently resumed following leader-level calls.
  • Gor, a close aide to President Donald Trump, was confirmed by the Senate in a 51–47 vote and presented Modi with a signed White House photograph bearing Trump's handwritten note.
