US Ends Temporary Protected Status for Nepal

Determining that improved conditions in Nepal negate the need for TPS, the Department of Homeland Security granted beneficiaries a 60-day transition period

Overview

  • The TPS designation, first granted on June 24, 2015 after Nepal’s devastating earthquake, will lapse on June 24, 2025 without renewal
  • Beneficiaries have until August 5 to secure a different immigration status or prepare to depart at the close of the 60-day window
  • Among roughly 12,700 Nepali nationals with TPS, over 5,500 have already become legal permanent residents in the United States
  • More than 7,000 remaining beneficiaries who have not adjusted their status face potential removal if they cannot obtain alternative lawful status
  • The DHS cited substantial post-quake reconstruction and enhanced disaster preparedness in Nepal as justification for rescinding the designation
