U.S. Drinking Rate Falls to 54% as Health Risks Spur Stricter Guidance

Federal dietary guidelines are under review to reflect findings that any alcohol use increases cancer risk

Overview

  • Gallup’s July survey found just 54% of U.S. adults reported drinking alcohol and that drinkers averaged 2.8 drinks per week, both the lowest levels on record
  • For the first time in Gallup’s tracking, 53% of respondents said moderate drinking is unhealthy rather than beneficial
  • The decline spans age groups with only half of adults aged 18 to 34 reporting alcohol use and sharp drops among those 35 to 54
  • The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology updated blood pressure guidelines in 2025 to advise abstention instead of setting daily drink limits
  • USDA and HHS are revisiting alcohol recommendations for the 2025–2030 dietary guidelines to incorporate evidence linking any level of drinking to cancer risk, with final guidance due by year-end
