U.S. Designates Four Europe-Based Antifa-Linked Groups as Global Terrorists, Plans FTO Listings

The move will trigger sanctions, travel bans plus criminal penalties once the terrorism listings take effect on Nov. 20.

Overview

  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio named Antifa Ost (Germany), the Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front (Italy), Armed Proletarian Justice (Greece) and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense (Greece) as Specially Designated Global Terrorists, with Foreign Terrorist Organization status slated for Nov. 20.
  • Once effective, U.S. law will block assets, bar entry to the United States, and expose anyone providing material support to criminal prosecution.
  • Officials cited bombings, IED attacks, shootings and organized assaults from 2018 to 2025, including Greek IED incidents in 2024 and 2025 and assaults tied to Antifa Ost in Germany and Budapest.
  • Antifa Ost was designated a terrorist group by Hungary in September, and German prosecutors have charged seven people linked to attacks associated with the network.
  • Republican allies such as Sen. Eric Schmitt praised the action, while experts and some foreign officials question applying FTO tools to decentralized anti-fascist networks.
