U.S. Customs Detains Taiwan-Made Giant Bicycles Over Forced-Labor Allegations

Giant says it will seek revocation of the order.

Overview

  • CBP issued a Withhold Release Order effective immediately covering bicycles, parts, and accessories manufactured in Taiwan by Giant Manufacturing Co. Ltd.
  • Investigators cited ILO indicators of forced labor at Giant, including abuse of vulnerability, abusive living and working conditions, debt bondage, withholding of wages, and excessive overtime.
  • Importers of detained shipments may destroy or export the goods or attempt to demonstrate the merchandise is admissible under U.S. law.
  • The move is the third WRO of 2025 and the fourth of the fiscal year, bringing CBP’s active enforcement to 53 WROs and nine Findings.
  • Giant told CNN it was unaware of any U.S. probe, will petition to revoke the order, expects some U.S. shipment delays, and says only Taiwan-made shipments are affected as Taiwan’s government offers assistance.
