U.S. Commerce Department Publishes BEA Macroeconomic Data to Public Blockchains

Commerce officials say putting machine‑readable BEA figures on multiple public networks will boost transparency by allowing smart contracts to reference official macro data.

Overview

  • The Commerce Department announced the project in August 2025 and Chainlink made six Bureau of Economic Analysis data feeds live across public chains on Sept. 1, 2026.
  • Chainlink’s feeds deliver six official measures — Real GDP, the PCE Price Index, and Real Final Sales, each provided as a level and as an annualized percent‑change — updated on the BEA’s monthly or quarterly schedule.
  • The feeds are available on a group of layer‑1 and layer‑2 networks including Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism, Linea, Mantle, Botanix, Sonic, and ZKsync, and Chainlink says it will add more networks if users request them.
  • The service is certified to ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 1 standards, and the Commerce Department also placed some BEA data on other chains such as Bitcoin and Solana in a separate upload supported by exchanges including Coinbase and Kraken, with Chainlink saying it did not take part in that upload.
  • Making official economic releases machine‑readable lets developers build price and risk systems, inflation‑linked tokens, and automated contract triggers, so regulators, markets, and DeFi platforms will be watching adoption and any market effects from broader onchain distribution of BEA data.
