U.S. Coast Guard Vows Reforms Following Damning Internal Review

Adm. Linda Fagan directs new training and policies, but critics question lack of accountability for past failures.

  • The U.S. Coast Guard is promising reforms after an internal review revealed a toxic workplace environment, sexual harassment, and a lack of safety felt by many members.
  • The review was prompted by a CNN expose of a secret investigation, dubbed 'Operation Fouled Anchor', which found that serious misconduct had been ignored and, at times, covered up by high-ranking officials.
  • The report showed that sexual harassment cases have spiked since 2017, with only 61 of 113 reported cases from fiscal 2021 being substantiated.
  • Adm. Linda Fagan, commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, has directed senior officers to prepare new training courses and develop new policies to ensure accountability for service members who report sexual harassment.
  • Despite the proposed reforms, critics, including U.S. Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, have expressed concern that the report does not hold anyone accountable for past failures, particularly at the Coast Guard Academy.
