U.S. Coast Guard Confirms Monitoring of Russian Intelligence Ship Near Oahu

The service says it used a lawful overflight followed by a cutter approach to maintain maritime security.

  • The Coast Guard disclosed that on October 29 it detected a Russian military vessel operating about 15 nautical miles south of Oahu.
  • The ship was identified as the Kareliya, a Vishnya-class Russian intelligence-collection vessel.
