U.S. Coast Guard Airlifts 8-Year-Old Boy from Cruise Ship in Medical Emergency

Daniel Jiang, suffering from appendicitis, was rescued amid challenging foggy conditions and successfully underwent surgery.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified of the emergency on the Royal Princess ship on Tuesday, Sept. 24, around 7 a.m. local time.
Daniel Jiang, an 8-year-old passenger, was diagnosed with appendicitis and needed immediate medical evacuation.
Foggy conditions made it difficult for the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to locate the cruise ship, which was 20 miles west of Eureka, California.
Daniel, along with his mother and brother, was hoisted into the helicopter and transported to Saint Joseph Hospital in Eureka.
Doctors successfully performed an appendectomy on Daniel, who is now in recovery and expected to be alright.
