Daniel Jiang, suffering from appendicitis, was rescued amid challenging foggy conditions and successfully underwent surgery.

  • The U.S. Coast Guard was notified of the emergency on the Royal Princess ship on Tuesday, Sept. 24, around 7 a.m. local time.
  • Daniel Jiang, an 8-year-old passenger, was diagnosed with appendicitis and needed immediate medical evacuation.
  • Foggy conditions made it difficult for the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to locate the cruise ship, which was 20 miles west of Eureka, California.
  • Daniel, along with his mother and brother, was hoisted into the helicopter and transported to Saint Joseph Hospital in Eureka.
  • Doctors successfully performed an appendectomy on Daniel, who is now in recovery and expected to be alright.
