Overview
- The United States will return to standard time on Sunday, November 1, 2026, when clocks are set back one hour at 2:00 a.m. local time.
- All states that observe daylight saving time, including California, Florida, New York, Illinois and Texas, will implement the rollback while Hawaii, most of Arizona and several U.S. territories do not change their clocks.
- Most internet‑connected phones, computers and smartwatches will update automatically but many manual devices such as wall clocks, ovens and some car clocks must be reset by hand.
- The policy debate is active: the U.S. House approved H.R. 139 to make daylight time permanent and California considered SB 1197 to adopt permanent standard time, but neither measure has become law and H.R. 139 awaits Senate action.
- Federal law and the U.S. Department of Transportation set the national DST calendar and allow states only to opt out to year‑round standard time which is why state laws favoring permanent daylight time cannot take effect without federal change.
