U.S. Clears $3.5 Billion SM-6 and SM-2 Sale to Germany

Congressional notification starts the review period ahead of negotiations to set final terms.

Overview

  • The State Department and DSCA approved a possible Foreign Military Sale and notified Congress on Nov. 14.
  • Germany requested up to 173 SM-6 Block I missiles and up to 577 SM-2 Block IIIC missiles under the package.
  • The proposal includes MK 21 and MK 13 Vertical Launch System canisters, test and handling equipment, engineering and integration support, training, and sustainment.
  • RTX is identified as the principal contractor, and the missiles are intended for Germany’s future Aegis-equipped F127 surface combatants to enhance air and missile defense and allied interoperability.
  • DSCA lists an estimated ceiling of $3.5 billion while some reports cite $3.2 billion, and officials say figures may change through negotiations with no impact on regional balance or U.S. readiness.
