U.S. Clean Energy Jobs Hit 3.56 Million in 2024 as New Policies Put Gains at Risk

E2’s 10th annual report finds the sector expanding far faster than the overall labor market in 2024.

Overview

  • The sector added nearly 100,000 positions in 2024, growing about 2.8% and roughly three times faster than the U.S. workforce.
  • More than 80% of new energy-sector jobs last year were in clean energy, lifting its share to about 42% of all U.S. energy employment.
  • Energy efficiency remains the largest employer with nearly 2.4 million workers; renewable generation jobs reached about 569,000 and clean vehicle jobs totaled about 398,000.
  • E2 says companies have canceled more than $22 billion in factories and projects since January 2025, eliminating roughly 16,500 anticipated jobs as federal support is rolled back.
  • Idaho, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida and New Jersey led 2024 job growth, and clean energy employment outnumbers oil, gas and coal jobs by roughly three to one.
