U.S. Cancer Diagnoses to Exceed 2 Million for First Time in 2024

- New cancer diagnoses in the U.S. for 2024 is predicted to top 2 million for the first time, according to the American Cancer Society’s annual report.
- Colon cancer is now the leading cause of cancer deaths in men under 50 and it ranks as the second leading cause for women under the same age group.
- American Cancer Society collected the most recent data on cases through 2020 from cancer registries and mortality data through 2021 from the National Center for Health Statistics.
- Rates are increasing for six of the 10 most common cancers: breast, prostate, melanoma, kidney, pancreas and uterine.
- About 42% of all cancers can be prevented through lifestyle changes or other factors.
