U.S. Builds Largest Overseas Military Hospital in Germany as State Premier Visits Site

The billion-dollar Weilerbach project is cast as a concrete signal of sustained U.S.–European security ties.

Overview

  • Rheinland-Pfalz Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer visited the Weilerbach construction site Friday near Ramstein, home to the largest U.S. military community outside the United States.
  • The hospital complex spans about 47 hectares with roughly 4,680 rooms and 120 treatment rooms and is expected to employ around 2,500 people.
  • The project is budgeted at about $1.59 billion, with Germany covering €266 million in planning costs.
  • Designed to serve roughly 50,000 U.S. personnel and families in the region, it will also support medical care for about 200,000 troops in operations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
  • U.S. European Command counts about 78,000 troops in Europe, including roughly 37,000 in Germany, and experts describe the investment as a sign of continuity after earlier talk of reductions.
