U.S. Border Patrol Apprehends 20 Romanians Attempting Illegal Entry from Canada

Two of the individuals, part of a family group, are linked to international organized crime, marking a rise in apprehensions in Maine's Houlton Sector.

  • 20 Romanian nationals, including 10 adults and 10 children, were apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol agents while attempting to illegally cross into the U.S. from Canada.
  • Two of the apprehended individuals are suspected to be part of a transnational organized crime ring and have been processed for expedited removal proceedings.
  • The incident occurred in the Houlton Sector of the U.S.-Canada border in Maine, which has seen a significant increase in apprehensions recently.
  • In the fiscal year 2024 alone, the Houlton Sector has encountered 55 individuals, compared to a total of 33 individuals in the last three Octobers.
  • More than 6,100 people from 76 countries have been apprehended illegally crossing into the U.S. from the northeastern border with Canada between October 2022 and September 2023.
