U.S. Border Apprehensions Fall to Lowest Level Since 1970, DHS Says

Fresh DHSCBP data place FY2025 apprehensions at a 55-year low following a year of tightened border enforcement.

Overview

  • DHS and CBP reported 237,565 southwest border apprehensions in FY2025, the fewest since 1970 when roughly 201,780 were recorded.
  • About 72% of the year’s apprehensions (172,026) occurred in the first 111 days under President Biden, with 65,539 recorded over the remainder under President Trump.
  • Monthly totals reached new lows over the summer, including 4,600 in July, 6,300 in August and about 8,400 in September, according to internal DHS figures.
  • DHS said zero migrants apprehended at the border were released into the United States in September, marking another month with no releases.
  • Officials credit deployments, curtailed asylum processing and expanded ICE operations; The Post reports DHS data indicating ICE is on pace for roughly 600,000 deportations in 2025 and more than 2 million voluntary departures since January.
