US Army Soldier Pleads Guilty to Data Theft Tied to Major Hacks

  • Cameron John Wagenius, a 20-year-old former US Army soldier, pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawfully transferring confidential phone records.
  • Prosecutors allege Wagenius was involved in hacking AT&T and Verizon, compromising over 110 million customer records, including sensitive call and text logs.
  • Wagenius is also linked to the Snowflake data breaches, where hackers accessed data from over 160 companies, including Ticketmaster and Santander Bank, in 2024.
  • The extortion scheme associated with the Snowflake hack demanded ransom payments and resulted in at least $2.5 million in cryptocurrency being paid by victims.
  • Two other suspects, Alexander Moucka and John Binns, also face charges related to the Snowflake breaches and are awaiting extradition for further prosecution.
