Overview

  • The US has approved a $23 billion deal to sell F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, following Turkey's ratification of Sweden's NATO membership.
  • The deal includes 40 new F-16s and upgrades for 79 existing models in Turkey's air force.
  • Greece, another NATO member, will also receive 40 advanced F-35 fighter jets worth $8.6 billion as part of the deal.
  • Hungary is now the only NATO member that has not approved Sweden’s application to join NATO.
  • The US Congress has 15 days to review the deal but it is not expected to oppose it.
