U.S. and G7 Move to Enforce UN Snapback on Iran as Russia Refuses Recognition

Fresh U.S. designations target procurement networks after UN penalties were restored by the E3.

Overview

  • The State Department blacklisted 44 individuals and entities tied to Iran’s nuclear and weapons procurement networks, including SPND director Reza Mozaffarinia and Andisheh Damavand International Technologies.
  • The Treasury Department sanctioned 21 entities and 17 individuals accused of sourcing sensitive goods for Iran’s defense ministry, citing networks linked to missile and military aircraft equipment and an illicit U.S.-made helicopter.
  • G7 foreign ministers endorsed the snapback that took effect Sept. 27 GMT and urged all UN members to fully implement the reinstated resolutions and restrictions.
  • The UK and Canada announced national measures to apply the restored UN sanctions, with London reapplying 121 UN designations and Ottawa updating regulations to reinstate export, financial and arms controls.
  • Russia’s UN ambassador said Moscow will not recognize or enforce the reimposed measures, underscoring a divide that complicates enforcement as Iran’s currency hits record lows.
