U.S. Ambassador-Designate Sergio Gor Meets Modi in Delhi as Trade Talks Restart

Gor’s outreach seeks to unlock progress in tariff-soured trade negotiations.

Overview

  • Sergio Gor met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi after separate meetings with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.
  • Gor said the talks covered defence, trade, technology and critical minerals, stressing that the United States values its relationship with India.
  • He told reporters that President Donald Trump regards Modi as a great personal friend and presented the prime minister a Trump-signed photograph from their White House appearance.
  • The six-day familiarisation visit runs through October 14, with Gor accompanied by Deputy Secretary Michael J. Rigas and not yet presenting credentials.
  • Tariffs imposed by Washington on many Indian exports have risen to as high as 50%, including a 25% levy linked to Russian crude purchases, while negotiations have resumed and some reports point to exploration of a limited trade deal.
