US, African Union Reaffirm Partnership During 9th Annual High-Level Dialogue, Discuss Democracy, Climate and Food Security

  • The United States and African Union Commission (AUC) reaffirmed their commitment to partnership at the 9th Annual U.S.-AUC High-Level Dialogue in Washington, D.C. The dialogue was led by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and AUC Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.
  • A key discussion centered on democratic governance, with both parties expressing concern over the recent trend of military takeovers in Africa and stressing the importance of democratic governance and African voices in global governance.
  • The US and AUC reviewed shared security challenges within specific African regions, including the Sahel, Sudan, Somalia, and the Great Lakes region. They agreed to collaborate in addressing these challenges and discussed the need for sustainable funding of African Union peace support operations.
  • Climate resilience and food security were also high on the agenda, with discussions on deepening the U.S.-AU Strategic Partnership on Food Security and promoting sustainable development across the continent. This included initiatives like Feed the Future and the related Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS).
  • The dialogue also reviewed progress towards key initiatives and deliverables announced at the December 2022 U.S. Africa Leaders Summit, along with recommendations to strengthen partnerships with African leaders.
