U.S. Adds Brotherhood Branches in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon to Terror List

Washington cites covert support for Hamas as the reason for the designations.

Overview

  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the listings on January 13, advancing a U.S. effort begun in November 2025 to target parts of the movement.
  • The designations trigger Treasury sanctions that freeze any U.S.-held assets of members of the named branches and bar U.S. persons from doing business with them.
  • The Treasury Department said the groups present themselves as civil-society organizations but secretly support terrorist organizations, naming Hamas.
  • Egypt welcomed the move, describing the Brotherhood’s ideology as a threat to regional and international security.
  • The Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in 1928, Hamas traces its roots to the movement, and Jordan banned the organization in April 2025.
