Ursid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight, Last of 2023

Visibility May Be Affected by Bright Waxing Gibbous Moon, Next Shower is the Quadrantids in Late December

  • The Ursid meteor shower, the last of 2023, is peaking on the night of December 22 and the early morning hours of December 23, offering skywatchers the opportunity to see meteors in the form of bright streaks of light and the occasional fireball.
  • The Ursids are a relatively low-key meteor shower that is active between December 17 and December 26, with its meteors appearing to stream in from the constellation of Ursa Minor.
  • The Ursids will peak around 11:00 p.m. EST, potentially producing around ten meteors per hour, although the actual number visible may be fewer due to the brightness of the waxing gibbous moon at 86% illumination.
  • The Ursid meteor shower is created from debris left around the sun by comet 8P/Tuttle, a midsized comet with a diameter of around 2.8 miles, larger than around 99% of known asteroids.
  • After the Ursids, the next meteor shower, the Quadrantids, becomes active on December 28 and lasts through January 12, 2024, with its predicted peak between January 3 and January 4, 2024.
