Urjit Patel Appointed India’s Executive Director at IMF for Three-Year Term

The ACC-cleared posting fills the IMF Board seat vacated in April, returning a former RBI governor with prior IMF experience to India’s slot.

Overview

  • An official DoPT order dated August 28, signed by ACC secretary Manisha Saxena, confirms Patel’s appointment for up to three years from the date he assumes charge or until further orders.
  • Patel succeeds Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian, whose tenure ended early on April 30, leaving India’s seat on the IMF Executive Board vacant.
  • As Executive Director, Patel will represent India and its South Asia constituency partners, including Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka, at the Washington-based Fund.
  • The IMF Executive Board comprises 25 directors and manages the institution’s routine operations, meeting frequently to consider papers prepared by IMF management and staff.
  • Patel served as RBI governor from 2016 to 2018 and previously worked with the IMF in the early 1990s, including a deputation to the RBI focused on market and banking reforms.
