Urgent Search Continues for Grandmother and 3 Children Lost in South Carolina Park

Crews report rugged, storm-damaged terrain is hindering the search after the 911 caller’s phone died.

Overview

  • The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office says a child called 911 shortly before 7 p.m. Monday reporting the group had been lost for about three hours in the Caesars Head State Park area.
  • Authorities identified the missing as Tonda Michelin, 53, and her grandchildren Melody Bangs, 14, Michael Lawton, 11, and Dale Moser, 9.
  • Deputies found a vehicle at the Raven Cliff Falls trailhead, which has been closed to provide emergency access for responders.
  • Dozens of personnel from multiple agencies, including at least 50 rescuers and the National Guard, are searching with helicopters, drones, UTVs, dogs and ground teams.
  • Morning fog limited some ground operations as aircraft and drones continued, and nearby residents were asked to check outbuildings and report any possible sightings.
