UPSC Says Facial Recognition Pilot Succeeded, Eyes Rollout Across Exams

A Gurugram trial matched registration photos in 8–10 seconds per candidate, underscoring anti-impersonation measures under the 2024 exam-fraud law.

Overview

  • The pilot ran on September 14 during the NDA & NA II and CDS II exams at select Gurugram centres, verifying registered candidates via AI-enabled facial authentication.
  • UPSC reported roughly 2,700 successful scans for 1,129 candidates, with average verification times of 8–10 seconds.
  • The system, developed with the National e-Governance Division, digitally matched live images to photographs submitted at registration to deter impersonation.
  • Chairman Ajay Kumar said the Commission plans to extend facial recognition across all examinations, including civil services, with standard operating procedures being drafted.
  • UPSC cited privacy and process integrity safeguards and flagged connectivity and staff training as key logistics to address before wider deployment.
