Upper-Level Low to Bring Sierra Thunderstorms Thursday With Weekend Warmup Ahead

A slow-moving system is channeling storms into higher terrain before a quick shift to sunnier, warmer conditions.

Overview

  • Scattered storms are expected to develop late Thursday morning along the Sierra crest, including the Tahoe area as well as Plumas and Mono counties, with heavy downpours, small hail or sleet, lightning and slick roads possible.
  • Lower elevations stay largely dry Thursday, with Sacramento Valley highs near the low 80s after several cooler-than-average days.
  • Storm chances diminish along the coast and in the North Bay Thursday as the disturbance slides toward Nevada, and the Bay Area turns sunny and warmer on Friday.
  • Forecasts point to warmer, drier weather Friday and Saturday regionwide, with valley highs in the upper 80s and a return to the 90s likely next week.
  • A slight chance of additional Sierra showers returns Sunday, and smoke from the Garnett Fire continues to affect air quality in some areas, including a dense smoke advisory for Mono County.
