UPI Sets New Monthly Record With 20 Billion Transactions in August

NPCI data point to essentials-led spending with pockets of discretionary recovery.

Overview

  • Daily transactions touched a new high of 707 million during the month, according to NPCI.
  • Spending on essentials remained the anchor, with total essentials at about Rs 75,800 crore and groceries and supermarkets at Rs 68,116 crore, up roughly 5% month on month.
  • Discretionary food and beverage outlays recovered, with restaurants up about 6.7% to Rs 19,432 crore and bars, clubs and lounges up 3% to Rs 3,414 crore.
  • Gaming spend fell 26.2% to Rs 7,441 crore following regulatory curbs, while debt collection agencies still led by value at Rs 77,007 crore despite a near 18% monthly decline.
  • PhonePe led UPI volumes at roughly 9.6 billion transactions, followed by Google Pay at about 7.4 billion and Paytm near 1.6 billion.
