UPI Marks 10 Years with Record Scale and Global Reach

The finance ministry says the instant payments system’s decade of growth makes it a central piece of India’s digital public infrastructure and a model for real-time retail payments abroad.

Overview

  • The government released FY2025-26 data on Monday showing annual UPI volume topped 24,162 crore transactions and value reached about ₹314 lakh crore.
  • Monthly activity set new highs in 2026 with 2,320 crore transactions in May and a peak of 2,366 crore in July valued at roughly ₹29.87–29.88 lakh crore.
  • UPI’s network has broadened from 44 banks at launch to about 703 live banks in FY2025-26, with slightly higher live-bank counts reported in July 2026.
  • The International Monetary Fund has recognised UPI as the world’s largest real-time payments system by transaction volume and the system now operates in 11 countries.
  • Much of UPI’s growth comes from everyday small payments: 63% of volume is person-to-merchant and 86% of those merchant transactions were under ₹500 in FY2025-26.
