UPI Hits All-Time High in December, Capping 2025 With Record Usage

Mounting outages with rising fraud refocus attention on reliability and consumer protection.

Overview

  • NPCI data show December processed about 21.63 billion UPI transactions worth roughly Rs 27.97 lakh crore, up 29% by volume and 20% by value year-on-year.
  • Average daily activity in December reached about 698 million transactions with an average daily value of roughly Rs 90,217 crore.
  • For calendar 2025, UPI exceeded 228 billion transactions with value near Rs 300 lakh crore as year-on-year volume growth in December dipped below 30% for the second time that year.
  • Person-to-merchant payments outpaced person-to-person transfers, and the average ticket size fell to around Rs 1,262–1,293, underscoring rising use for small, routine purchases.
  • Repeated system outages and a sharp rise in reported UPI-linked fraud—over 13 lakh cases with losses above Rs 1,000 crore in 2024–25—have intensified concerns about resilience and user protection.
