Upa Lokayukta Mandates Buffer Zones as Karnataka Plans to Replicate Mysuru Treatment Model

Buffer zones around Mysuru’s waste and sewage plants have been enforced pending health assessments with a view to replicating the city’s model statewide.

Overview

  • Justice K. N. Phaneendra has forwarded to the state government a proposal to replicate Mysuru’s Rayanakere solid waste and sewage treatment systems in other districts.
  • Officials have been ordered to enforce 500-metre buffer zones around the Rayanakere and Kesare treatment facilities and to cancel unauthorized housing developments.
  • Public health impact assessments within a 5–10 kilometre radius of the plants are under way to monitor environmental and community health risks.
  • Local authorities have been instructed to clear vegetation, control odour emissions and adopt scientific waste management methods at the treatment sites.
  • Regular health camps and provision of protective gear, including gloves, boots and masks, have been mandated for plant workers to improve safety.
