Up to 18 Inches of Snow to Hit Montana and Wyoming Mountains This Weekend

Forecasters warn of dangerous high-country travel with snow levels dropping toward 6,000 feet.

Overview

  • The National Weather Service has Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories in effect across mountain zones of Montana and Wyoming through Sunday.
  • Montana’s Absaroka-Beartooth and Crazy Mountains are forecast to receive 10 to 20 inches, with localized totals near 18 inches in Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains.
  • Many other ranges are expected to see 2 to 7 inches, with over a foot possible on the highest peaks as colder air surges in behind successive fronts.
  • Gusts up to roughly 35 mph and heavy, wet snow will create hazardous to impassable conditions on mountain passes including Togwotee, Powder River, Granite and Going-to-the-Sun Road.
  • Lower elevations will see valley rain and a sharp cooldown, followed by a widespread hard freeze Sunday night into Monday and a return to seasonable conditions by midweek.
