UP Student Dies After Setting Himself on Fire Over Exam Fee Dispute

Authorities have filed a case against the principal with probes initiated into the role of three named policemen.

Overview

  • Ujjwal Rana, a second-year BA student at DAV PG Degree College in Budhana, set himself ablaze on campus after being refused an examination form over about ₹7,000 in unpaid fees, leaving a video and note alleging humiliation and assault by the principal and police.
  • He suffered roughly 70% burns and died during treatment at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on Sunday evening, according to police and a family member.
  • Based on a complaint from his sister, police registered a case naming the principal and others under BNS sections 351(3) and 352, and the Muzaffarnagar SSP said teams have been formed to arrest the accused.
  • Three policemen identified in the complaint—Sub-Inspector Nand Kishor and constables Vineet and Gyanvir—were sent to police lines pending investigation into alleged misconduct.
  • Student protests continued as political leaders demanded a judicial inquiry, compensation of ₹1 crore and a government job for the family, and stricter regulation of fees at private colleges.
