UP STF Nabs Two in ₹7-Crore Hooghly Jewellery Heist, Recovers Cash and Ornaments

Police say Chandannagar intelligence guided the interstate operation, with West Bengal investigators set to take custody for the next phase of the probe.

Overview

  • Adarsh Singh Behda of Jaunpur and Suraj Seth of Varanasi were arrested near the Gambhirpur toll plaza in Azamgarh, according to the UP Special Task Force.
  • Officials recovered ₹20 lakh in cash, multiple diamond rings, a gold ring, a diamond necklace, two phones, and a new Royal Enfield motorcycle allegedly bought with the loot, described as worth over ₹1 crore.
  • The arrests relate to the August 3 daylight robbery at Sohan Gold and Diamonds in Hooghly, where six armed men stole about five to six kilograms of jewellery valued at roughly ₹7 crore.
  • Investigators say the gang fled Kolkata toward Ranchi and then Varanasi, divided the booty, and sold portions through contacts for lakhs of rupees.
  • Behda is described by police as a habitual offender with prior cases for violent crimes, while a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act is registered at Dankuni and efforts to trace other suspects continue.
