• IAS officer Rinku Singh Rahi was relieved of his SDM duties in Puwaiyan tehsil and attached to the UP Revenue Board in Lucknow about 36 hours after performing sit-ups before protesting lawyers.
• The gesture followed his first-day inspection in which he punished a clerk for open urination and acknowledged filthy toilets by doing sit-ups holding his ears.
• Local lawyers had staged a sit-in demanding an apology for what they called public humiliation and pointing out that poor sanitation forced clerks into open urination.
• A senior state official said Rahi’s public sit-ups violated the All India Services Conduct Rules and were “unbecoming of an officer.”
• Rahi had pledged immediate cleaning and repair of tehsil toilets, but there is no confirmation yet that those sanitation measures have been implemented.
