UP Issues Fresh Order Threatening Action Over Ignored Lawmakers’ Letters

The directive responds to fresh complaints from legislators by pairing mandatory registers with the prospect of disciplinary action.

Overview

  • The government order dated September 12, signed by Parliamentary Affairs Principal Secretary JP Singh-II, warns officers to prioritize and reply to letters from MPs, MLAs and MLCs or face action under rules.
  • The order was circulated to additional chief secretaries, the DGP, departmental heads, divisional commissioners and district magistrates across Uttar Pradesh.
  • Every office must keep a register of correspondence with public representatives, acknowledge receipt, and send replies detailing action taken.
  • If officials continue to ignore such letters, the issue will be escalated to the chief secretary and the chief minister, according to Singh.
  • The move follows grievances raised during last month’s monsoon session and reiterates earlier directives from 2018, 2021 and April 2025, with the BJP backing stricter compliance and the Samajwadi Party accusing the government of allowing ongoing disregard for legislators.
